Whitehills

Whitehills is a small village on the Moray Firth coast, near Banff, Scotland. I’ve spent quite a lot time there, as I have family connections.

Like many of the villages along this coast, the older houses along the shore front have been built with their gable ends facing the sea, to minimise the impact the sea and weather.

The village dates back to the 16th century when fishing was the main industry. A new harbour was built in the 1900 and with the decline in the fishing industry in the 20th century, the harbour was converted into a marina.

To the East of the village lies the Red Well. The building is believed to date back to Roman times and houses a spring that produces a red deposit from its water. The beehive shaped building is positioned such that on the spring and autumn equinox, the rising sun illuminates the interior of the building.
